How Much Does a Yard of Mulch Weigh?

Cubic yard of mulch being weighed beside a wheelbarrow

How much does a yard of mulch weigh? For planning, a cubic yard of common dry wood or bark mulch is often estimated at roughly 400 to 800 pounds. The exact weight can change a lot with the type of mulch and, especially, how much moisture it contains. A wet load can weigh several hundred pounds more than the same volume when dry.

If you are starting with an area and depth instead of a known yardage, use the CalcWoven Cubic Yards Calculator first. It converts your measurements into cubic yards and also gives a rough mulch weight estimate.

A practical weight estimate for one cubic yard

A cubic yard is a volume: 27 cubic feet. It does not have one fixed weight. What fills that 27-cubic-foot space determines the weight.

Mulch conditionUseful planning range per cubic yardWhat changes it
Dry wood or bark mulchAbout 400–800 lbWood species, particle size and packing
Damp mulchOften heavier than the dry rangeRecent watering, rain and storage
Very wet mulchCan reach around 1,000 lb or moreHow much water the material has absorbed

These are planning ranges, not a delivery guarantee. Bulk suppliers may have a more accurate pounds-per-yard figure for the exact product they sell, so use their number when it is available.

Why mulch weight changes so much

Two loads can both measure exactly one cubic yard and still weigh very different amounts. The biggest reasons are:

  • Moisture: wood and bark absorb water, so mulch after rain can be much heavier than dry mulch.
  • Material: bark, shredded hardwood and wood chips have different densities.
  • Particle size: smaller pieces can settle more tightly, while larger chips leave more air space.
  • Compaction: loosely loaded mulch weighs less per apparent volume than material that has settled or been compressed.

Why CalcWoven uses a 500 lb-per-yard mulch estimate

The current CalcWoven calculator uses about 0.25 US ton per cubic yard for mulch, which is approximately 500 pounds per cubic yard. That number is meant to be a simple planning estimate for relatively light, dry mulch. It should not be treated as the actual weight of every mulch product.

If your supplier gives you a product-specific weight, use that instead. For a wet or unusually dense mulch, the real number may be much higher.

Mulch weight table using a 500 lb estimate

If you only need a quick planning figure, the table below uses 500 pounds per cubic yard:

Cubic yardsEstimated weightEstimated US tons
0.5 yd³250 lb0.125 ton
1 yd³500 lb0.25 ton
2 yd³1,000 lb0.50 ton
3 yd³1,500 lb0.75 ton
5 yd³2,500 lb1.25 tons

Again, this table is an estimate. If the mulch is wet, the real load can be considerably heavier.

How to estimate the weight of your own mulch order

If you already know how many cubic yards you need, the math is simple:

Estimated pounds = cubic yards × pounds per cubic yard

For example, using the 500 lb planning estimate:

  • 2 cubic yards × 500 lb = 1,000 lb
  • 3 cubic yards × 500 lb = 1,500 lb
  • 4 cubic yards × 500 lb = 2,000 lb

Can you haul a yard of mulch in a pickup?

Weight matters most when you plan to pick up mulch yourself. A dry yard may be relatively light compared with gravel or topsoil, but a wet load can add a lot of weight quickly.

Do not rely on a generic truck-class estimate. Check the payload rating for your exact vehicle, usually shown on the certification or tire-and-loading label inside the driver’s door area. Payload also includes passengers, tools and anything else already in the vehicle. If the estimated load is close to the limit, delivery is the safer option.

Bulk mulch vs bagged mulch

Bulk mulch is normally ordered by the cubic yard, while bagged mulch is sold by bag volume. If you are deciding between the two, our guide to how many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard shows the bag counts for common sizes.

For reference, one cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. That means 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags equal one cubic yard mathematically, so you would normally need to buy 14 whole bags to meet or exceed that volume.

Quick answers

How much does one cubic yard of mulch weigh?
For common dry wood or bark mulch, roughly 400–800 pounds is a useful planning range. Moisture can push the actual weight much higher.

How much do 2 yards of mulch weigh?
Using a 500 lb-per-yard planning estimate, 2 yards would weigh about 1,000 pounds. Treat that as an estimate, not a fixed value.

Does wet mulch weigh more?
Yes. Wood and bark absorb water, so rain or recent watering can make the same cubic yard noticeably heavier.

Is mulch sold by weight or by volume?
Bulk landscape mulch is commonly sold by volume in cubic yards. Bagged mulch is usually labeled by volume in cubic feet.

Mulch weights vary by material, moisture, packing and supplier. Use these figures for planning only, and confirm the actual product weight with your supplier before hauling a heavy load.
