Area
Coverage & waste
Check your supplier’s label. Rolls commonly cover 9–16 sq ft each; pallets commonly cover 400–500 sq ft, but both vary by supplier.

Formula: area × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per roll = rolls needed, rounded up. Pallets use the same area divided by your pallet’s coverage.
HOW IT WORKS
Why coverage per roll matters most
Unlike mulch bags, sod rolls and slabs are not sold in a standard size. Depending on the farm and supplier, one piece might cover anywhere from about 9 to 16 square feet, and a pallet commonly holds 400 to 500 square feet, but this varies. This calculator does not guess a number for you: check the coverage printed on your supplier’s label or website and enter it, so the result matches what you’re actually buying.
Why add extra for waste?
Lawns are rarely a perfect rectangle. Curved edges, beds, paths and trimming around obstacles all create offcuts that can’t be reused elsewhere. Adding 5–10% extra is a common practice to avoid running short partway through installation.
Measuring an irregular lawn
Split the lawn into simpler shapes — rectangles, a circle or two — work out each area, add them together, then enter the total using “Known area” above. For the underlying math, see square feet to cubic yards conversion, which covers the same area formulas used here.
Laying the sod once it arrives
Once you know how much to order, see how to lay sod for a step-by-step installation guide, including soil preparation, laying pattern, watering schedule and when it’s safe to mow.
QUICK ANSWERS
Common questions
How big is a standard roll of sod?
There is no single industry standard. Common roll and slab sizes cover roughly 9 to 16 square feet each, but it depends entirely on the sod farm. Always check your specific supplier’s listed coverage.
How much sod is on a pallet?
Commonly 400 to 500 square feet, though this also varies by supplier and grass type. Check the pallet’s listed coverage before ordering.
How much extra sod should I order?
A common rule of thumb is 5–10% extra for cutting and fitting around curves and obstacles. Use the waste selector above to include it automatically.
Does this calculator know sod prices?
No. Prices vary by grass type, region and supplier. Enter your own price per square foot, roll or pallet for a cost estimate.
